Ogikuboan
A moment to unwind in the city.
Down a quiet Ogikubo side street, confectionery shop Ogikuboan presents a wide range of Japanese sweets, from whole-daifuku-filled bread buns to salted black soybean mochi and chestnut dorayaki.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just a short walk from the south exit of Ogikubo Station, down an unassuming side street, stands the modest storefront of Ogikuboan. Inside the compact shop, glass cases are packed tightly with colorful mochi confections and original house-branded creations.
The shop's signature item is the Ogikubo Daifuku Pan, an eye-catching treat that bakes an entire habutae mochi daifuku directly inside soft bread dough. The elastic chew of the rice cake and the mild sweetness of the bean paste meld seamlessly into the bread. Fillings alternate between smooth koshian and coarse tsubuan, alongside variations wrapped in fragrant mugwort mochi or flavored with toasted black sesame.
Ogikuboan uses habutae mochi for its daifuku skins, yielding a remarkably delicate stretch and a melt-in-the-mouth texture. Alongside classics such as smooth bean paste and the lightly salted black soybean daifuku—where the firm texture of the beans and a hint of salt balance the sweet filling—the lineup rotates with the seasons. Choices range from textured zunda edamame paste and juicy fresh strawberry daifuku to playful seasonal novelties flavored with mango or ramune.
The counter also features satisfying chestnut dorayaki pancakes packed with whole candied chestnuts, bite-sized mitarashi dango filled with sweet soy glaze, and delicate seasonal jo-namagashi. It is a dependable stop while wandering through Ogikubo to gather an assortment of confections to enjoy on the go or take home as gifts.
